The “90-Second Recruiter Test” Strategy
Recruiters often review many CVs for the same position. Your CV should not require them to search, interpret, or guess your value.
It should answer four questions quickly:
Who are you?
What do you specialise in?
What results have you produced?
Why are you a strong fit for this position?
The 4-Question CV Test
Before submitting your CV, imagine that a recruiter has only 90 seconds to understand your profile.
1. WHO ARE YOU?
Your professional profile should immediately communicate your identity and level of experience.
Instead of:
“Hardworking and motivated professional seeking an opportunity…”
Show your professional value:
“Finance and Grants Professional with 10+ years of experience in financial management, donor compliance, grants accountability and reporting.”
Your identity should be clear before the recruiter reaches your experience section.
2. WHAT DO YOU SPECIALISE IN?
Highlight the capabilities most relevant to the position.
For example:
Financial Management | Grants Management | Donor Compliance | Budgeting | Financial Reporting | Audit Support
Avoid filling the CV with every skill you have ever acquired. Focus on the skills the employer is actually looking for.
3. WHAT RESULTS HAVE YOU PRODUCED?
Responsibilities tell recruiters what you were assigned to do.
Achievements show what happened because you did it.
Instead of:
“Managed financial reports and budgets.”
Show evidence:
“Managed financial reporting and grant accountability for UGX 5B+ across 20 sub-recipients, strengthening compliance and timely reporting.”
Where possible, use numbers, percentages, scale, savings, growth, people reached, projects managed or improvements achieved.
4. WHY DO YOU FIT THIS POSITION?
Your CV should connect your experience directly to the employer's needs.
Ask:
“If the recruiter reads only my profile, key skills and recent experience, will they understand why I belong on this shortlist?”
If the answer is no, your CV needs stronger positioning.
The 90-Second Audit
Before submitting, scan your CV and check:
☐ Professional identity is immediately clear
☐ Specialisation is obvious
☐ Most relevant skills are visible
☐ Strong achievements appear early
☐ Results are supported with evidence
☐ Keywords from the vacancy are naturally reflected
☐ Recent and relevant experience stands out
☐ The CV clearly connects your experience to the position
☐ No important information is buried in unnecessary text
The “Remove the Guesswork” Rule
A recruiter should not have to ask:
“What does this person actually do?”
“Are they experienced enough?”
“What have they achieved?”
“How does their experience relate to this role?”
Your CV should answer these questions before the interview.
The 90-Second Formula
IDENTITY → SPECIALISATION → EVIDENCE → RELEVANCE → SHORTLIST
The goal is not to make your CV shorter simply for the sake of being short.
The goal is to make every important piece of information easy to find, easy to understand and difficult to ignore.
“Don’t make recruiters search for your value. Make your value impossible to miss.”
