What you'll be stepping into

To assist in planning, inspecting, supervising, and coordinating maintenance activities on railway track infrastructure in order to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient railway operations. JOB TITLE: ASSITANT PERMANENT WAY INSPECTOR GRADE:

RG7 REPORTS TO: Permanent Way Inspector NUMBER OF VACANCIES: Three (3) DUTY STATION: Railway Network across the Country

KEY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Track Inspection

• Assist in carrying out routine inspections of railway tracks, turnouts, sidings, level crossings, and associated infrastructure.

• Identify defects in rails, sleepers, ballast, fastenings, joints, and formation.

• Monitor track geometry, alignment, gauge, cant, and rail wear.

• Prepare inspection reports and recommend corrective actions.

2. Maintenance Supervision

• Supervise track maintenance gangs undertaking routine and emergency maintenance.

• Ensure maintenance work complies with railway engineering standards.

• Verify that maintenance activities are completed within prescribed timelines.

• Monitor quality of maintenance works carried out by contractors where applicable.

3. Safety Management

• Ensure compliance with railway safety rules and engineering standards.

• Monitor implementation of safe working procedures during maintenance activities.

• Identify unsafe conditions and initiate corrective measures.

• Participate in accident and derailment investigations relating to track defects.

4. Preventive Maintenance

• Assist in preparing preventive maintenance schedules.

• Monitor periodic tamping, ballast cleaning, rail grinding, and sleeper replacement programmes.

• Ensure drainage systems remain functional.

• Monitor vegetation control along railway reserves.

5. Emergency Response

• Participate in emergency restoration of railway lines following derailments, floods, washaways, or accidents.

• Coordinate emergency repair teams.

• Ensure temporary speed restrictions are implemented where necessary.

6. Asset Management

• Maintain records of track condition.

• Assist in maintaining track asset registers.

• Monitor life cycle of rails, sleepers, switches, and crossings.

• Recommend replacement of worn-out infrastructure.

7. Planning and Reporting

• Prepare weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance reports.

• Maintain inspection records and maintenance logs.

• Collect data for budgeting and maintenance planning.

8. Materials Management

• Monitor usage of track materials.

• Verify receipt and issuance of engineering materials.

• Ensure proper storage of rails, sleepers, fishplates, fasteners, and ballast.

9. Compliance

• Ensure compliance with:

• Occupational Safety and Health requirements

• Environmental regulations

• Uganda Railways Corporation policies and procedures

11. Any Other Duties

• Perform any other duties assigned by the Permanent Way Inspector or Chief Civil Engineer. A. Academic Qualifications

• Certificate in Civil Engineering, Railway Engineering, Construction Engineering, or equivalent from a recognized institution. Added Advantage

• Ordinary Diploma in Civil Engineering or Railway Engineering. B. Experience

• At least 2 years of practical experience in transport Infrastructure maintenance or railway civil engineering.
