What you'll be stepping into
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) Uganda is seeking highly qualified and motivated individuals to join its dynamic team as Agricultural Officers (02).
Important: This role is contingent upon the successful securing of funding for the project.
Overall Purpose of the Role
The Agricultural Officer will be responsible for the technical implementation of DRC’s Food Systems and Economic Self-Reliance Project across the three mutually reinforcing outcomes in the districts of Obongi, Moyo, Yumbe, Koboko, Madi-Okollo, and Terego.
The role will ensure the appropriateness and quality of project activities while supporting Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) training, particularly for community farmer groups and Project Management Committees.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Community Mobilization and Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) Engagement
Mobilize communities and identify target participants, with support from the Climate and Food Security Team Leader, to participate in project activities.
Support Agriculture Assistants in identifying and selecting programme participants in accordance with established participant selection criteria and ensure proper profiling and maintenance of participant databases.
Mobilize and sensitize communities on sustainable, regenerative, and climate-smart agricultural practices.
Organize and conduct technical training for participants on enterprise selection and Climate Smart Agriculture practices.
Establish block/cluster gardens with clear production and market plans.
Support farmer groups in establishing permagardens for household food and nutrition security using the Resilience Design Approach.
Organize and facilitate community meetings, workshops, and awareness campaigns to promote Climate Smart Agriculture practices.
Identify community needs, concerns, and priorities to inform project design and implementation.
Strengthen community ownership of environmental initiatives through participatory approaches and co-design processes.
Provide routine technical support to Agriculture Assistants.
Prepare and submit periodic activity reports to the Climate and Food Security Team Leader.
2. Environmental Awareness and Capacity Building
Develop and deliver educational materials and training sessions on ecosystem restoration, climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable resource use.
Promote environmentally friendly practices within communities, including recycling, composting, and water conservation.
Identify and mentor community-based environmental champions to lead localized conservation efforts.
Collaborate with schools and local institutions to integrate environmental education into their activities.
3. Project Implementation Support
Participate in the distribution of project inputs, including cash transfers and agro/small-business materials, to targeted groups.
Assist the Agriculture Officer in planning and implementing Climate Smart Agriculture activities, including Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Integrated Pest Management, and soil and water conservation.
Ensure timely delivery of materials and resources required for community-based activities.
Monitor and report on community participation and progress toward project goals.
4. Stakeholder Collaboration
Represent DRC in coordination meetings organized at both district and settlement levels with key stakeholders, including the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), UNHCR, and District Production Department.
Build and maintain relationships with local leaders, government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders involved in agriculture, food security and livelihoods, and climate-resilient programmes to strengthen project implementation.
Work collaboratively with CSA partner staff to identify synergies and strengthen climate resilience and food security.
Represent DRC in local forums and events related to agricultural production.
5. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
Participate in monitoring and evaluation of project activities to ensure alignment with project objectives.
Collect and report data on project outcomes, community participation, and feedback.
Prepare regular updates, success stories, and lessons learned for internal and external sharing.
Regularly collect accurate project-related information and data for submission to M&E for reporting.
Participate in quarterly OPM and District monitoring, project reviews, and evaluations.
About You
To be successful in this role, you must have at least 3 years of practical field experience in community mobilization and project implementation.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Extension, or a related field.
Experience in mobilizing communities for participatory activities.
Experience implementing ecosystem restoration, climate adaptation, and natural resource management projects using the labour-intensive approach.
Experience managing workforces and community members.
Strong analytical, communication, and report-writing skills.
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and undertake practical demonstrations.
Knowledge of the local context, including market systems, Climate Smart Agriculture, environment, and gender inclusion.
Competent motorcycle riding skills and a valid riding licence.
Full professional proficiency in written and spoken English.
Desirable
Knowledge of languages spoken in the project locations.
