What you'll be stepping into
Key Responsibilities
1. Classroom Environment and School Ethos
The successful candidate will:
Create a positive, inclusive, and respectful learning environment that recognizes learners' different abilities, behaviours, backgrounds, and cultural diversity.
Ensure that every learner feels valued, cared for, respected, and encouraged to participate actively in learning.
Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and orderly classroom environment.
Encourage learners to take pride in their work and appropriately display their achievements and learning activities.
Report any damage, misuse, safety concerns, or maintenance issues promptly.
Monitor learners' personal hygiene, appearance, and school uniform in accordance with school expectations.
Monitor lesson attendance and maintain appropriate attendance records.
Demonstrate professionalism through punctuality, appropriate dress, preparedness, and positive conduct.
Encourage learners to work cooperatively and develop positive relationships with their peers.
2. Teaching and Learning
The teacher will be responsible for delivering effective English instruction and supporting learners to achieve the expected academic outcomes.
Key duties include:
Plan, prepare, and deliver effective daily English lessons aligned with the relevant curriculum and learning objectives.
Provide appropriate instruction, learning activities, assessment, and academic support based on learners' needs.
Use engaging and student-centred teaching approaches to improve participation and learning outcomes.
Develop learners' growth mindset by promoting critical thinking, creativity, ethical awareness, responsibility, respect, collaboration, and problem-solving.
Integrate appropriate technology and modern teaching resources into classroom instruction.
Collaborate with other teachers and participate in professional learning communities to strengthen teaching practices and align instruction with 21st-century learning approaches.
Contribute to the achievement of agreed subject and examination targets.
Set, mark, and review homework in accordance with departmental and school policies.
Regularly review students' notebooks and classwork to monitor progress and identify areas requiring additional support.
Use assessment results and classroom evidence to inform subsequent teaching and provide learners with constructive feedback.
Prepare learners thoroughly for examinations, including the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE).
Maintain appropriate records of learners' academic performance, progress, and learning activities.
Identify learners who require additional support and implement appropriate interventions.
Encourage student leadership, responsibility, teamwork, and active participation in school life.
3. Parent and Community Relations
The teacher will contribute to strong relationships between the school, learners, parents, and the wider community by:
Maintaining constructive communication with parents regarding learners' academic performance, behaviour, progress, and overall development.
Participating in formal and informal teacher-parent conferences.
Attending relevant parent meetings and school-community engagements.
Providing parents with appropriate information and guidance regarding their children's learning and development.
Promoting the positive image, values, and reputation of Aga Khan School within and beyond the school environment.
4. Personal and Professional Development
The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to continuous professional development by:
Participating in professional development programmes, workshops, training sessions, and other learning opportunities.
Keeping up to date with modern teaching approaches, educational technology, curriculum developments, and effective classroom practices.
Applying knowledge and skills gained through professional development to improve classroom instruction and learner outcomes.
Identifying personal learning and professional development needs.
Pursuing professional growth in line with the teacher career pathway and expectations of Aga Khan Education Service, Uganda (AKES,U).
Sharing relevant knowledge and effective teaching practices with colleagues where appropriate.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills
Applicants should possess:
A Bachelor's degree in Education or a Bachelor of Arts degree with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
At least five (5) years of relevant teaching experience, preferably within the applicable curriculum and Upper Primary level.
A demonstrated record of consistent and effective classroom performance.
In-depth knowledge of contemporary teaching methods and educational practices.
Sound understanding of relevant educational policies, procedures, and professional requirements.
Proficiency in using technology to support teaching, learning, assessment, and classroom activities.
Thorough knowledge of student-centred pedagogical approaches.
Strong classroom management and learner-engagement skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with teaching colleagues, parents, school leadership, and other stakeholders.
