Role overview

What you'll be stepping into

The laboratory technician will be responsible for collection of blood and other test specimens as requested by the doctors and clinicians. He/she will ensure that the specimens are delivered to the laboratory and analysed, and results delivered to the attending clinician/participant in a timely manner.

Roles and responsibilities:

  1. Review the study protocols and laboratory manuals.

  2. Accurately collect and label test specimens exactly as outlined in each clinic requisition as guided by the standard operating procedures

  3. Receive and assess sputum samples from patients

  4. Process and prepare collected specimens for laboratory testing

  5. Ensure all collected test specimens are packaged well, delivered to the lab and timely results delivered to the clinic.

  6. Maintain a register of all requested tests; follow up on all tests sent out and ensure there is a record of returned results in the register

  7. Assist in the compilation of data for the laboratory’s monthly reports

  8. Clean and maintain the work area and medical equipment

  9. Demonstrate excellent customer care and ensure timely processing of samples

  10. Coordinate queries between the clinic and the laboratory to ensure successful resolution.

  11. Develop SOPs for the lab

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology

    • Knowledge of regulatory requirements & Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)

    • Registration with the Allied Health Medical Professional Council with a valid Annual Practicing License (APL).

    • IATA certification is an added advantage.

    • Minimum of 2 years working experience in a busy clinical or medical research laboratory

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

    • Analytical skills
