Management Trainee – Data Protection Investigations

To provide operational and administrative support to the Compliance and Investigations function of the Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO).

Key Accountabilities

• Assist with the intake and initial review of complaints received by the PDPO, including checking submissions for completeness, categorising complaints according to their nature and severity, and preparing acknowledgement communications for complainants.

• Support investigation activities by gathering and organising documentary and digital evidence, preparing case summaries, and maintaining accurate investigation files in accordance with established case management procedures.

• Maintain and update the investigation case register, monitor the progress of assigned matters against statutory timelines, and alert the supervising officer to cases that may be at risk of delay.

• Assist in preparing investigation reports by compiling factual information, conducting legal research, and drafting relevant sections under the supervision of the assigned Data Protection Specialist.

• Draft routine correspondence to complainants, respondents, and other relevant parties at different stages of the investigation process, including acknowledgement letters, requests for information, and status update notices.

• Assist in preparing evidence briefs, witness statements, and supporting documentation for regulatory proceedings, court processes, or alternative dispute resolution, as directed by the supervising officer.

• Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Minimum Requirements

Education

• A Bachelor of Laws (Hons.) degree from a recognized university is required.

• A Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre is required.

• Training in Data Protection and Privacy from an internationally recognised institution will be an added advantage.

Experience

• A minimum of six (6) months of experience in legal practice within a reputable public or private organisation is required.

Technical Competencies

• Knowledge of Uganda’s criminal and regulatory legal framework, including the:

  • Penal Code Act, Cap. 128

  • Criminal Procedure Code Act, Cap. 122

  • Evidence Act, Cap. 8

• Knowledge of Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy legal framework.

• Strong legal research and analytical skills, with the ability to identify relevant legal provisions and apply them appropriately to specific factual circumstances.

Behavioural Competencies

• Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with stakeholders, including law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, and other regulatory bodies.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously and prioritise assignments effectively to meet statutory and operational deadlines.

• High level of integrity and a strong commitment to ethical and professional conduct.
