The Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) is a statutory body established under Section 9 of the Petroleum (Exploration, Development and Production) Act, Cap. 161, in line with Uganda's National Oil and Gas Policy, which was approved in 2008.
The Authority's mandate is to monitor and regulate the exploration, development, and production of petroleum, as well as the refining, gas conversion, transportation, and storage of petroleum in Uganda.
PAU is also responsible for ensuring that petroleum operations in Uganda are conducted in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, statutes, and international best practices in the petroleum industry.
