What you'll be stepping into
The Pharmacist will be responsible for leading safe, efficient, and financially sustainable pharmaceutical services at the assigned hospital. The role involves ensuring the appropriate use of medicines, reliable medicine availability, regulatory compliance, high-quality patient care, and effective performance of the pharmacy team.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Care and Medication Safety
Review prescriptions to ensure clinical appropriateness, correct dosing, and consideration of potential drug interactions, contraindications, and allergies.
Provide accurate medicine information, patient counselling, medication reconciliation, and clinical pharmacy support.
Lead processes related to medication errors, near misses, adverse drug reactions, and pharmacovigilance, including Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA).
Promote rational prescribing, antimicrobial stewardship, and compliance with the hospital formulary.
2. Operations, Inventory and Financial Management
Ensure consistent medicine availability through accurate forecasting, timely ordering, redistribution, and effective minimum–maximum stock controls.
Ensure the proper receipt, storage, issuing, and reconciliation of medicines and pharmaceutical stock, including compliance with FEFO/FIFO principles, cold-chain requirements, and controlled-medicine procedures.
Monitor and control stock-outs, expired medicines, stock variances, emergency purchases, revenue leakage, and unbilled medicines.
Monitor revenue, cost of sales, gross contribution, mark-up, and pricing compliance, and recommend appropriate corrective actions where necessary.
3. Quality, Compliance and Governance
Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, professional requirements, accreditation standards, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and relevant licences.
Conduct pharmacy audits, address and close audit findings, and lead measurable quality-improvement initiatives.
Maintain accurate records for controlled medicines and effectively manage recalls, quarantines, and approved disposal processes.
Prepare and submit accurate reports and participate in clinical governance, Medicines and Therapeutics, quality, and antimicrobial stewardship forums.
4. People and Stakeholder Leadership
Plan pharmacy staffing and duty rosters, set performance objectives, and supervise, coach, and assess pharmacy personnel.
Coordinate staff induction, competency development, and continuing professional education.
Collaborate effectively with clinical, nursing, finance, procurement, supply chain, quality, HR, and hospital management teams.
Promptly escalate significant patient-safety, operational, financial, or regulatory risks to the appropriate level of management.
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from a recognised institution.
Full registration and a valid annual practising licence in Uganda.
Minimum of three years' post-registration experience, preferably in a hospital setting.
Supervisory experience is desirable.
Training or experience in clinical pharmacy, supply chain management, or quality management is an added advantage.
Competence in pharmacy management systems, data analysis, and Microsoft Office applications.
