What you'll be stepping into
Makerere University School of Public Health, in partnership with San Diego State University and the Makerere University Walter Reed Program, is implementing Kisoboka II, a five-year NIH-funded study focused on reducing hazardous alcohol use and optimising treatment as prevention among men living with HIV in fishing communities.
The project is seeking three Research Assistants to support participant recruitment, follow-up, and data collection activities while ensuring high-quality, ethical, and protocol-compliant research implementation.
Key Responsibilities
The Research Assistants will:
Support participant recruitment and follow-up data collection, including interviews and blood sample collection and handling.
Recruit, screen, and obtain informed consent from eligible study participants.
Collect, prepare, document, and coordinate the transportation of blood samples in accordance with study protocols.
Maintain accurate study records, participant identifiers, data-collection tools, supplies, and equipment.
Prepare daily field updates and reports.
Participate in training sessions, debriefings, and review meetings.
Support participant mobilisation and distribute approved participant incentives.
Strictly comply with study protocols, research ethics, and confidentiality requirements.
Perform any other duties assigned by the Project Manager.
Qualifications and Desirable Qualities
Applicants should have:
A Bachelor’s degree, diploma, or equivalent qualification, together with training in phlebotomy.
At least two years of experience as a Research Assistant, particularly in quantitative health or psychosocial data collection.
Proficiency in ODK, Kobo Collect, or similar tablet- or phone-based data-collection platforms.
Fluency in Luganda and English.
Strong communication, data-quality management, and confidentiality skills.
Experience in fishing-community research or health research is an added advantage.
Certification in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) or Human Subjects Protection is an added advantage.
Willingness to work in field settings, including relocating or travelling to islands.
Willingness to occasionally work outside normal official working hours.
