What you'll be stepping into
Yako Bank was incorporated in 2010 and began operating as a deposit-taking microfinance institution, Yako Microfinance Uganda Ltd, in September 2015. In 2020, the institution was upgraded and licensed by the Bank of Uganda as a Tier II Credit Institution under the name Yako Bank Uganda Limited, taking over the financial services business of its predecessor microfinance arm.
Today, Yako Bank is a fully-fledged credit institution serving a growing clientele through a network of four branches in Kampala and Jinja.
The Bank offers a range of financial products and services, including savings accounts, term deposits, collateralised and non-collateralised loans, and basic mobile banking services. Its target markets include SMEs, salaried individuals, micro-entrepreneurs, and smallholder farmers.
Senior Compliance Officer

Reports to: Manager, Compliance
Duty Station: Head Office, Kampala
The Senior Compliance Officer will be responsible for identifying, assessing, monitoring, and reporting on compliance risks across Yako Bank's existing and proposed business activities.
The role will support business activities that advance the Bank's objectives while ensuring compliance with applicable laws, Bank of Uganda regulations, AML/CFT/CPF requirements, and the Bank's internal policies, procedures, and guidelines.
The position will also coordinate and oversee the activities of the Compliance Officer, Monitoring.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
Identify and assess compliance risks associated with the Bank's current and proposed business activities, including new products, business relationships, and expansion of operations.
Maintain an accessible inventory of essential laws and regulations relevant to the Bank.
Develop and implement policies, systems, mechanisms, and procedures that enable staff to report failed controls and violations of established policies and procedures.
Assess the adequacy of internal policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Follow up on identified deficiencies and recommend amendments where necessary.
Supervise the implementation of corrective measures arising from compliance reviews.
Monitor compliance with internal policies, procedures, and guidelines through regular and comprehensive compliance risk assessments and testing.
Develop and maintain effective mechanisms for resolving and closing compliance-related exceptions across the Bank.
Ensure compliance with AML/CFT/CPF policies and procedures and support appropriate action where non-compliance occurs.
Centralise information relating to compliance matters, including regulatory breaches, violations of the Code of Conduct, policy and procedure breaches, and conflicts of interest.
Educate and train staff on applicable laws, regulations, rules, and standards.
Establish and/or supervise appropriate compliance checks and controls across the Bank, including its agent network.
Implement compliance and risk-monitoring tools and risk maps covering activities, triggers, probabilities, and required actions.
Spearhead the implementation of internal controls and ensure continued adherence to established controls.
Coordinate and oversee the activities of the Compliance Officer, Monitoring.
Perform any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
Minimum Educational and Technical Requirements
Applicants should have:
An Honours Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, or a related field from a recognised university.
Thorough understanding of the financial services sector, regulatory environment, and banking policies and procedures.
A professional qualification in Governance, Compliance and Conduct, AML/CFT, Financial Crime Risk and Regulation, Fraud Examination, or another relevant professional discipline is an added advantage.
At least three years of relevant experience in compliance, financial crime, auditing, fraud, investigations, or a related field, preferably within a busy commercial banking environment.
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, communicate effectively, and train others.
Ability to self-monitor and travel when required.
Strong teamwork skills and a proven track record of high performance.
Must not be undergoing any disciplinary action.
High level of integrity.
