Afreximbank, through its Creative Africa Nexus programme (CANEX) is excited to announce the 4th edition of CANEX Shorts. This short film competition for young filmmakers in Africa and the Diaspora. CANEX Shorts has been established in order to further engage with the film community ahead of CANEX WKND 2026. CANEX WKND 2026 will once again host an engaging and exciting programme of creative industry conversations, masterclasses, deal rooms, market and exhibition and more.
CANEX Shorts is a short film competition that will culminate in screenings and an award ceremony at CANEX WKND 2026, taking place in Lagos, Nigeria from 5 - 8 November 2026.

Ce concours de courts métrages s’adresse aux jeunes cinéastes d’Afrique et de la diaspora.
CANEX Shorts a été créé afin de renforcer l’engagement avec la communauté du cinéma en amont de CANEX WKND 2026.
CANEX WKND 2026 proposera à nouveau un programme dynamique et captivant composé
d’échanges autour des industries créatives, de masterclasses, de deal rooms, d’un marché,
d’expositions et bien plus encore.
CANEX Shorts est une compétition de courts métrages qui se conclura par des projections et une cérémonie de remise de prix lors de CANEX WKND 2026, qui se tiendra à Lagos, au
Nigeria, du 5 au 8 novembre 2026.
Awards & Prizes
CANEX Shorts will award 3 prizes based on the selection of a well known and respected jury.
Each winner will receive a cash prize of $2000 and have their film screened at CANEX WKND 2026 and be invited to the event. Flights and accommodation to be paid for.

Best Documentary
Best Animation
Les cinéastes d'Afrique et de la diaspora sont invités à soumettre des films d'une durée maximale de 5 minutes via FilmFreeway pour avoir une chance de figurer parmi les trois lauréats :
• Meilleur court métrage fiction
• Meilleur documentaire
• Meilleur film d'animation
CANEX Shorts décernera 3 prix sur la base de la sélection faite par un jury réputé et respecté.
Chaque lauréat recevra un prix en espèces de 2 000 $, verra son film projeté lors du CANEX WKND 2026 et sera invité à l'événement. Les frais de transport et d'hébergement seront pris en charge.

Rules & Terms
Eligibility:
The competition is open to Africans living on the continent and in the diaspora
Films must be no longer than 5 minutes in length.
The filmmaker must currently be between the ages of 18 – 35. The film must have been made in 2024 or after and at the time of making the film the filmmaker must have been between the ages of 18-35. Substantiation may be requested.
The filmmaker must own all rights - including music and must have supporting
