About the opportunity
What this programme is offering
n addition to the scholarship programme, the Bassi Foundation offers a limited number of five-year postdoctoral research grants annually. However, applications for the 2026 cycle are currently closed.
About Laura Bassi
The scholarship is named in honour of Laura Bassi, a pioneering academic born in Bologna in 1711. She was the first woman in Europe to hold a professorship and one of the earliest women to earn a doctoral degree.
Her career spanned nearly five decades, during which she became a central figure in the scientific community of 18th-century Europe. She later assumed the Chair of Physics at the University of Bologna in 1776, a remarkable achievement during a time of significant gender barriers in academia.
The scholarship reflects her legacy by supporting innovative and unconventional academic research.
