About the opportunity

What this programme is offering

Oregon State University Graduate Scholarship Details:

The Robinson Lab in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences at Oregon State University (wdouglasrobinson.com) is seeking a motivated graduate student (M.S. or Ph.D.) to begin in Winter Term (January) or Spring Term (April) 2027.

Current research opportunities in the lab focus on:

  • establishing and evaluating long-term biodiversity benchmarks and avian population trends;

  • understanding the factors that influence bird population fluctuations across time and space;

  • exploring avian diversity and ecology through bioacoustics, including passive acoustic monitoring in poorly studied yet ecologically interesting situations (e.g., night flight calls in the Pacific Northwest) and studies of vocal variation, especially the cryptic diversity in crossbills and grosbeaks.

The lab maintains several extensive long-term datasets and archival sound collections that provide numerous opportunities for innovative research and publication. Projects that build upon these existing resources and align with the lab’s current research priorities are encouraged.

  • Students are also welcome to propose novel research ideas that extend the lab’s areas of expertise. However, successful projects should include a component that contributes to the lab’s ongoing research programs and existing data resources.

  • Candidates with strong skills in field identification of birds by sight and sound, quantitative interests, and excellent interpersonal skills are especially likely to thrive in our collaborative research environment.
