About the opportunity
What this programme is offering
Supporting Documentary Photography and Visual Storytelling
The Women Photograph + Leica Project Grants are specifically designed to support photographers working in a documentary capacity. The funding can be used to cover essential reporting and production expenses, enabling recipients to focus on creating meaningful and in-depth visual journalism projects.
Grant recipients may use the funding for:
Reporting and travel expenses
Project production costs
Creative and professional fees
Research and fieldwork
Other direct expenses associated with the creation of documentary photography work
Organizers note that the grants are intended to support the production of original photographic projects and are not designed to fund secondary outputs such as:
Exhibitions
Workshops
Educational programs
Other promotional materials
The emphasis remains on supporting the creation of compelling documentary stories that contribute to public understanding of important issues around the world.
Three Grants Worth $10,000 Each
Through generous support from Leica USA, Women Photograph will award three separate project grants, each valued at $10,000.
The funding is available for:
Camera Lenses
New documentary photography projects
Ongoing or in-progress documentary work
Independent visual journalism initiatives
Applicants are encouraged to present a coherent story or body of work rather than submitting standalone images. While portfolio images do not necessarily need to be directly related to the proposed project, applicants are encouraged to explain any differences between submitted images and their proposed project within their application.
Who Can Apply?
The grants are open to documentary photographers from any country and nationality.
Eligible applicants include:
Women photographers
Nonbinary photographers
Transgender photographers
Intersex photographers
Women Photograph emphasized that inclusivity remains central to its mission and that the organization actively seeks to support photographers representing diverse identities, experiences, cultures, and geographic regions.
Importantly, applicants do not need to be members of Women Photograph to apply.

Commitment to Ethical and Transparent Storytelling
Women Photograph has also addressed the growing role of artificial intelligence in visual storytelling.
Applicants who incorporate generative artificial intelligence into any aspect of their work must clearly disclose its use within their application materials.
This requirement reflects the organization’s commitment to maintaining transparency, ethical journalism standards, and audience trust in documentary photography.
Intellectual Property and Photographer Rights
One of the most significant benefits of the grant is that recipients retain full ownership of all work produced through the funding.
Successful grantees will maintain complete intellectual property rights over their photography projects.
Women Photograph and Leica USA may request access to selected promotional images solely for purposes related to:
Camera Lenses
Promoting the photographer
Showcasing the funded project
Highlighting the grant program
The organizations have confirmed that such usage will be limited to grant-related promotional activities.
Important Deadline for Applicants
Prospective applicants are encouraged to carefully review submission requirements and ensure they submit their applications before the closing date.
Key dates include:
Applications Open: 20 May 2026
Application Deadline: 30 June 2026
Deadline Time: 11:59 PM Eastern Time (ET)
Organizers have stated that no exceptions will be made for late submissions, and applications cannot be reopened after the deadline.
Advancing Representation in Global Photojournalism
The Women Photograph + Leica Project Grants continue to play an important role in supporting underrepresented voices in documentary and visual journalism.
By providing meaningful financial support, professional recognition, and increased visibility, the grants help photographers pursue ambitious projects that might otherwise face financial barriers.
Photographic & Digital Arts
For documentary photographers committed to telling impactful stories and bringing attention to important global issues, the 2026 Women Photograph + Leica Project Grants represent a valuable opportunity to secure funding and advance their work on an international stage.
