What you'll be stepping into

job Responsibilities

  • To receive, organize, and securely manage audio recordings and related research materials from the SBS department for transcription

  • To accurately transcribe interviews recordings into written text according to established transcription guidelines, study protocols, and SOPs.

  • To ensure timely completion and submission of transcripts to the Head of Department (HOD) or designated supervisor.

  • To review and edit transcripts for completeness, accuracy, consistency, and clarity while maintaining the integrity of participants’ responses.

  • To identify and appropriately label inaudible sections, unclear speech, local language expressions, and non-verbal cues as required by study procedures.

  • To maintain regular communication with the HOD and research team regarding progress, challenges, and any issues affecting transcription quality or timelines.

  • To bring to the attention of the HOD or supervisor any concerns arising from audio recordings, including poor sound quality, missing recordings, or incomplete interviews

  • To participate in transcript quality assurance processes, including transcript verification, correction, and revision based​

  • To ensure strict confidentiality and ethical handling of all research data, recordings, transcripts, and participant information.

  • To participate in relevant training sessions for transcription and data management procedures.

  • To comply with all organizational policies, research protocols, SOPs, and data protection requirements.

  • To perform any other duties related to transcription and research support as may be deemed necessary by the immediate HOD from time to time.

Knowledge and Experience

  • bachelor’s degree in social sciences, Social Work and Social Administration (SWSA), Development Studies, Education, Adult and Community Education, Humanities, Journalism and Languages.

  • At least one (1) year of experience in transcription, of qualitative research data.

  • Demonstrated experience in transcribing qualitative research interviews.

  • Good computer knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly MS Word, as well as audio transcription software.

  • Excellent listening, typing, editing, and proofreading skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Good written communication skills and ability to produce clear, accurate, and well-formatted transcripts.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

  • Fluency in Luganda and/or other local languages relevant to the study communities.

  • Demonstrated ability to translate and transcribe qualitative data accurately into English.

  • Knowledge of research ethics, confidentiality, and data protection requirements in handling research data.

  • Ability to organize and manage multiple transcription assignments while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a bigger research team.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
