Uganda Christian University (UCU) is seeking a qualified and experienced Risk Management Officer to support the development, implementation, and monitoring of the University’s risk management systems.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing risk management policies and frameworks, identifying emerging risks, monitoring compliance, assessing internal controls, and coordinating risk mitigation efforts across the University. Applicants should demonstrate strong analytical and accounting skills, professional integrity, and a commitment to ethical practice and the University's Christian values.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must meet one of the following qualification pathways:

Option 1: Master’s Degree Pathway

  1. A Master’s degree in Business Administration, Commerce, or Management from a recognised institution of higher learning.

  2. A Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Commerce, or Management from a recognised institution of higher learning.

  3. At least five (5) years of work experience, including two (2) years performing similar risk management duties.

  4. A professional qualification in ACCA, CPA, or CIA, and a certificate in ISO 31000 Risk Management, will be an added advantage.

Option 2: Bachelor’s Degree Pathway

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Commerce, or Management from a recognised institution of higher learning.

  2. A certificate in ISO 31000 Risk Management.

  3. At least five (5) years of work experience performing similar duties.

  4. A professional qualification in ACCA, CPA, or CIA will be an added advantage.

Other Specifications and Required Competencies

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • In-depth understanding of risk management systems and procedures.

  • Strong accounting and analytical skills.

  • Knowledge of current risk management techniques and best practices.

  • Integrity, reliability, and professional independence.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building abilities.

  • Advanced computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office and accounting software such as SAP and FOCUS.

  • Ability to analyse large volumes of data and prepare detailed reports.

  • High standards of ethics, integrity, and objective judgement.

  • Must be a committed and practising Christian.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Risk Management Officer will be expected to:

1. Risk Management Framework and Policy Development

  • Develop a Risk Management Framework for the University.

  • Develop the University’s Enterprise Risk Management Policy.

  • Establish and quantify the University's risk appetite, defining the level of risk the institution is prepared to accept.

  • Develop business continuity plans to minimise risks and support operational continuity.

2. Risk Identification and Mitigation

  • Coordinate with departmental heads to ensure the completion of departmental risk registers.

  • Develop a risk management system and train departmental risk champions in its implementation.

  • Proactively identify emerging risks and report them to management and the Audit and Risk Management Committee.

  • Monitor and coordinate the mitigation of risks across the University.

  • Monitor the implementation of action plans to ensure risk mitigation measures are progressing as required.

3. Internal Controls and Audit Follow-Up

  • Assess the adequacy of the University’s internal control framework in managing risks and achieving institutional goals and objectives.

  • Liaise with department and division heads to assess the adequacy of proposed actions addressing risks identified in internal audit reports.

  • Monitor corrective actions and risk management measures across departments.

4. Compliance and Reporting

  • Monitor and report on compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Compile detailed risk reports to support management decision-making.

  • Analyse risk-related data and provide objective assessments to relevant University leadership and committees.

5. Other Responsibilities

  • Perform any other official duties assigned by the supervisor from time to time.
