About the opportunity
What this programme is offering
The CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars Program is a highly competitive international research fellowship for exceptional early-career researchers. The 2027–2029 cohort is now open, with applications having opened on September 2, 2026.
🎓 Program Overview
Program: CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars Program 2027–2029
Host organization: Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR)
Location: Canada / International
Level: Early-career researchers / Faculty
Duration: 2 years
Eligible nationalities: All nationalities
Field: Natural sciences, biomedical sciences, social sciences and humanities, depending on the participating CIFAR research programs
💰 What Does the Program Provide?
Selected Global Scholars receive:
💰 CAD $100,000 in unrestricted research support over the two-year term.
🌎 Membership in a leading international, interdisciplinary research community.
🤝 Opportunities to collaborate with senior researchers and other emerging scholars.
🧠 Mentorship and professional development.
🎤 Opportunities to develop leadership and communication skills.
✈️ Participation in CIFAR research-program meetings and activities around the world.
🔬 Opportunities to develop new interdisciplinary research collaborations.
The CAD $100,000 is research support, not a personal salary or conventional student scholarship. This distinction is important when sharing the opportunity.
👨🔬 Who Is Eligible?
The program is intended for outstanding early-career researchers who:
Hold a PhD or equivalent.
Are within the early stages of an independent research career.
Hold a full-time research position at an institution of higher education or research.
Have responsibility for conducting an independent research program and supervising/teaching trainees.
Demonstrate exceptional research achievement and future potential.
Have research interests that complement one of the CIFAR research programs recruiting Global Scholars.
Are interested in interdisciplinary collaboration and engagement beyond academia.
Previous CIFAR program guidance explicitly states that postdoctoral fellows are not eligible; applicants are expected to have moved into an independent research position.
🌍 Nationality
There are no geographical restrictions on who may apply. This makes the program genuinely international and potentially accessible to qualified researchers from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas and elsewhere.
🔬 Research Areas
CIFAR's Global Scholars join specific interdisciplinary CIFAR research programs. Applicants should therefore not apply simply because they are researchers; their proposed research must complement the themes of a participating CIFAR program.
The program covers research across areas including:
Artificial Intelligence
Computer Science
Neuroscience
Biology
Biomedical Sciences
Physics
Mathematics
Earth and environmental sciences
Economics
Social sciences
Humanities
Education and human development
Other interdisciplinary research areas
The exact research programs accepting applications for the 2027–2029 cohort should be checked on CIFAR's current application page.
📝 How to Apply
Applicants should:
Review the CIFAR research programs recruiting Global Scholars.
Identify the program that best matches their research.
Prepare the required research and personal statements.
Create an application through CIFAR's online application portal.
Submit the required supporting information before the deadline.
If applying to more than one recruiting program, submit a separate application for each program. CIFAR's application guidance confirms this requirement.
📅 Application Deadline
Applications for the 2027–2029 cohort opened September 2, 2026.
⚠️ Important: I could verify the opening date from CIFAR's current official page, but I could not verify a published 2027–2029 closing deadline from the accessible official page/search results. Therefore, I would not publish a specific deadline until CIFAR confirms it.
⭐ Who Should Apply?
This is not an undergraduate, Master's or ordinary PhD scholarship.
It is particularly suitable for:
Early-career university researchers, assistant professors and equivalent independent researchers who already hold a PhD and are building an internationally recognized research program.
⚠️ Important Funding Clarification
This is a research fellowship, not a fully funded degree scholarship.
The headline benefit is CAD $100,000 in unrestricted research support, which is intended to support the scholar's research activities. It should not be advertised as “$100,000 cash scholarship” or “fully funded PhD.”
✅ Verification
VERIFIED — GENUINE OPPORTUNITY
CIFAR's official website confirms that applications for the 2027–2029 cohort are open and that successful scholars receive CAD $100,000 in unrestricted research support.
