What you'll be stepping into
To undertake the construction, inspection, maintenance, repair, and renewal of railway track (permanent way) infrastructure to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient movement of trains in accordance with railway engineering standards, safety regulations, and organisational policies.
1. Track Maintenance
• Carry out routine and preventive maintenance of railway tracks.
• Repair defects in rails, sleepers, ballast, fastenings, switches, and crossings.
• Replace damaged or worn-out track components.
• Maintain proper track geometry including alignment, gauge and cross-level
2. Track Inspection
• Inspect railway tracks for defects and report abnormalities.
• Identify rail wear, cracks, loose fastenings, damaged sleepers, and ballast deficiencies.
• Assist in conducting scheduled track inspections.
• Record inspection findings accurately.
3. Construction and Renewal Works
• Participate in construction of new railway lines.
• Assist in track renewal and rehabilitation projects.
• Install rails, sleepers, fishplates, clips, bolts, and other permanent way materials.
• Participate in turnout installation and maintenance.
4. Ballast Maintenance
• Pack and tamp ballast manually or using mechanised equipment.
• Clean ballast where necessary.
• Ensure proper drainage around railway tracks.
• Restore ballast profile after maintenance.
5. Vegetation Control
• Clear vegetation that may obstruct visibility or damage railway infrastructure.
• Maintain drainage systems and culverts.
• Remove debris from railway reserves.
6. Plant, Tools and Equipment
• Operate hand tools and small track maintenance equipment safely.
• Maintain tools in good working condition.
• Report defective equipment for repair.
• Ensure proper storage of tools after use.
KEY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
JOB TITLE: ARTISAN – PERMANENT WAY GRADE: RG8 NUMBER OF VACANCIES: Three (3) 7. Safety and Compliance
• Observe railway safety rules and procedures.
• Wear prescribed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Implement safe work procedures during maintenance activities.
• Assist in protection of work sites from train movements.
• Report unsafe conditions immediately.
8. Emergency Response
• Respond promptly to derailments, washaways, track failures, and other emergencies.
• Participate in restoration of railway operations following incidents.
• Provide emergency maintenance during adverse weather conditions.
9. Record Keeping
• Maintain daily work records.
• Record materials used during maintenance.
• Submit maintenance reports to supervisors.
• Report faults requiring major repairs. A. Academic Qualifications
• Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE).
• Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) is an added advantage.
• Craft Certificate in Civil Engineering, Railway Engineering, Building Technology, Construction, or a related technical discipline from a recognised institution.
B. Experience
• At least 2 years of practical experience in transport maintenance, construction, or civil engineering works.
