Job Purpose

The Head Investment Banking will lead, manage, and deliver Debt Financing Solutions (DFS) across multiple portfolios and complex client relationships.

The role will be responsible for designing and implementing client-focused debt solutions that deliver exceptional client experiences, achieve revenue targets, increase market share, and strengthen Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) as a leading lending franchise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Originate, develop, lead, and structure debt financing solutions aligned with the global Debt Solutions business strategy.

  • Identify and drive strategic objectives for the DFS portfolio to optimise client and shareholder returns, grow Investment Banking revenue, and protect or increase market share.

  • Develop and maintain strong internal stakeholder networks to identify cross-selling opportunities, deliver end-to-end debt solutions, and build new business pipelines.

  • Build and maintain relationships with relevant external stakeholders to understand market developments, identify opportunities, and strengthen the bank’s reputation.

  • Monitor developments in the market, industry, regulatory environment, and client base and translate these insights into strategies for Corporate & Investment Banking.

  • Support existing transactions, identify new opportunities, strengthen thought leadership, and influence market developments.

  • Oversee pitchbook planning and, where required, approve final proposals, pitchbooks, and other origination materials.

  • Lead client engagements as a trusted debt solutions advisor by providing expert insights, advice, and solutions tailored to client needs.

  • Oversee portfolio origination activities, provide strategic direction, monitor performance against targets, and adjust origination strategies based on client needs.

  • Oversee the conceptual design of financial models and provide expert input into assumptions to ensure their validity and reliability.

  • Review and approve debt solutions, supporting documentation, and deliverables to ensure financial models and term sheets align with client requirements and CIB commercial, risk, and regulatory frameworks.

  • Identify and pursue opportunities that strengthen the Standard Bank franchise while balancing mandate viability, deal feasibility, and the likelihood of successful deal closure.

  • Drive transactions that contribute to Investment Banking revenue growth and market share expansion.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have:

  • A First Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.

  • A postgraduate qualification and/or professional certification such as CFA, CA, ACCA, or CPA is preferred.

  • More than 10 years of experience originating and executing complex debt financing transactions within Corporate and Investment Banking.

  • A proven track record of driving business growth, revenue generation, and market share expansion.

  • Strong experience managing senior-level client, investor, and stakeholder relationships.

  • At least 5–10 years of experience leading high-performing teams and developing talent within a financial services environment.

  • Extensive experience in risk management, governance, and regulatory compliance within a complex banking environment.
