Role overview
What you'll be stepping into
Manage the safe charging, routine handling, and basic maintenance of batteries for electric forklifts, pallet trucks, stackers, and other material handling equipment.
Support continuous warehouse operations by ensuring optimal equipment availability, extending battery life, and upholding strict electrical and chemical safety standards.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Receive discharged equipment or batteries and safely position vehicles at designated charging stations according to standard operating procedures.
Inspect charging cables, connectors, plugs, battery cases, and terminals for visible damage before connecting charging equipment.
Match the correct charger to the specific battery type and voltage to prevent equipment damage or hazardous conditions.
Record all charging activities, battery usage metrics, charging times, and equipment availability in station logs.
Monitor and replenish electrolyte or water levels using only approved water at the correct stage of the charging cycle for applicable battery types.
Maintain charging stations free of combustible materials, loose tools, damaged cables, and physical obstructions while monitoring area ventilation.
Inspect batteries for signs of failure such as swelling, cracked casings, corrosion, loose connections, overheating, or unusual odours, reporting issues immediately.
Clean batteries using approved methods and assist with simple connector replacement or basic maintenance strictly under technical supervision without conducting unauthorized electrical repairs.
Coordinate charging schedules with warehouse supervisors to maintain fleet availability without permitting unsafe rapid charging or premature battery changes.
Skills
Battery charger operation, connector inspection, and battery type identification
Electrical and chemical safety awareness, including PPE usage and emergency spill response
Water maintenance procedures and corrosion monitoring for industrial batteries
Diligent record keeping, log maintenance, and basic numeracy
Routine physical inspection and hazard identification in battery charging environments
Education Qualifications & Experience
Education Qualifications
Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Maintenance, or related engineering fields.
Diploma, National Diploma, National Certificate, Craft Certificate, Trade Test, vocational qualification, apprenticeship, or technical school credential in Electrical Installation, Motor Vehicle Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or related technical trades.
Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) eligible where comprehensive technical and safety training is provided prior to independent charging duties.
Experience
No prior work experience required.
Structured onboarding training is provided covering battery types, charging sequences, electrical hazards, chemical hazards, ventilation, PPE, water topping, record keeping, charger operation, and emergency response.
